Are John Deere die cast metal replicas considered toys for kids to play with or collectibles?

When you start looking for a vintage or any kind of pre-owned tractor for the farm, there are a number of items it is advisable to remember. First of all, do not get carried away by nostalgia. Acquiring and rebuilding an old tractor can be a wonderful pleasing hobby to engage in. However it also can develop into a pricey one.

cdoubie asked:

My wife and I are having a disagreement about toys to get kids this Christmas. Before her and I got together she was used to buying her 2 boys the metal replicas of John Deere tractors and such for them to play with. But at $25 a piece and up I think that is way to much to spend on one toy. I believe that they are for collectors and for the people that use them in models and display scale models. She says that the plastic John Deere toys tear up and get broken too easily. What are your thoughts?

Prior to your starting to look for your tractor, make sure that you understand what you really want. This might seem overly basic, however it is easy to get side tracked and buy something that you didn't start out to find. Only after you are able to make an itemized list of the requirements should you begin your search. Don't forget to add the technical and performance requirements in your list. If you do not know exactly what you will be searching for, how are you going to decide where and how to search?

If you are seriously hunting for an antique tractor, be careful and not allow enthusiasm run away with you. If you do, you may well be in trouble before beginning your project. Restoring an antique tractor or other old farm implement is rewarding. Nevertheless it's not an overnight project moreover it might get costly quite quickly. Components for many old tractors are available but some are difficult to locate and can be on the spendy side. Original tires could be impossible to buy and reproduction tires can cost more than your tractor. You may well discover that rather than buying a project tractor, it would be just as satisfying to buy one which somebody else has already put all of the time, effort and expense into. Odds are good that you could buy it for less cash than the owner put into it, to say nothing about all of his labor.

Try the tractor before you decide to buy it. Do you find it easy to start and appear, solid and feel right? Are the tires in good shape? Is there any hydraulic leakage noticeable? Can you detect any missing pieces or equipment? Make certain and give equally close an examination to any attachments. As a final point, make certain that a classic tractor truly fits the needs of the job you desire it for. It is difficult to go wrong with an antique tractor such as a John Deere if you search carefully.

Check the packaging. It should say what age children these things are intended for — you know, “not for children under 10.” Or, it may say “For decoration only. Not a toy.” Don’t settle for hearsay and others’ opinions; go to the source and get the truth. See for whom those items are actually intended.

John Deere Stuff

Well, I have collected quite a few of them over the years and I think could be either or… it depends on how old the boys are. I think they are for the most part, better for collecting, but if you look around at Walmart, they do make matchbox like John Deere toys that would probably be more suitable for playing with than a typical die cast collectible.
