I have a john deere 160 and it seems to be slipping when I mowing can you adjust the clutch or could it be somthing else, maybe the belt slipping?
Before you start searching for your tractor, be certain you understand what you truly would like. This may possibly seem overly simple, but it is easy to become side tracked and buy something which you didn't start out to buy. Only after you are able to make an itemized listing of the requirements should you start the hunt. Do not forget to include your technical and performance needs in your list. If you do not understand precisely what you're searching for, how are you going to determine where and how to look?
If you are sincerely hunting for a vintage tractor, be careful and not permit enthusiasm run away with you. If you do, you could well be in difficulty before you begin your project. Restoring an antique tractor or other old farm implement is rewarding. However it's not an overnight project moreover it might become expensive quite swiftly. Components for many aged tractors are obtainable but some are tough to locate and can be on the spendy side. Original tires may be difficult to buy and reproduction tires might cost more than the tractor. You might find that rather than buying a project tractor, it would be just as satisfying to purchase one which someone else has previously put all of the time, effort and expense into. Odds are favorable that you could buy it for less money than the owner put into it, to say nothing of all of his labor.
Try the tractor before you decide to buy it. Do you find it easy to start and look, sound and feel right? Are the tires in good shape? Is there any kind of hydraulic leakage obvious? Can you notice any missing parts or accessories? Make sure and give equally close an examination to any attachments. As a final point, make sure that a vintage tractor actually meets the requirements of the job you want it for. It truly is tough to go wrong with an antique tractor like a John Deere if you search cautiously.

There are three slots around the circumference of the clutch. There are also three nuts from the bottom looking up. The gap measured in each of the three slots should be .012″. It is not likely the clutch. It will usually either engage or not. It is most likely a belt. Check the belt for wear. The belt will wear on the sides making it narrower and riding deeper in the pulley acting like it is longer than it should be. Belts are a lot cheaper than that electric clutch. Good luck.
