Prior to starting trying to find a classic or any pre-owned tractor for your farm, there are a few things you have to consider. First, do not get captivated from nostalgia. Getting and rejuvenating an old tractor may be a wonderful pleasing pastime. However it also can turn out to be a costly one.
I have just purchased a sears craftsman mts 5500. I compared it against a couple of different John Deere mowers. I believe that the competitors have caught up with JD. Yet the JD's are still more expensive. I am wondering if people spending extra money for actual quality, perceived quality, or just simply the JD paint?
Before beginning to hunt for your tractor, be sure that you understand what you really want. This may appear overly simple, nevertheless it is easy to get side tracked and buy something that you did not start out to purchase. Only once you are able to make a detailed listing of the requirements should you commence the hunt. Don't forget to include the technical and performance needs in your listing. Unless you understand precisely what you will be searching for, how are you going to determine how and where to search?
If you are seriously hunting for an antique tractor, be careful and not permit enthusiasm get the best of you. If you do, you might well be in difficulty before beginning the project. Restoring an antique tractor or other old farm implement is gratifying. Nevertheless it isn't an overnight project moreover it can get expensive very rapidly. Components for many older tractors are available however some are tough to locate and may be on the spendy side. Original tires may be impossible to locate and reproduction tires may cost more than the tractor. You may well discover that instead of buying a project tractor, it would be just as enjoyable to purchase one which someone else has previously put all of the effort, expense and time into. Chances are good that you could acquire it for a lesser amount of cash than the owner put into it, to say nothing about all of his labor.
Test any tractor before you decide to get it. Is it simple to start and appear, solid and feel right? Are the tires in good shape? Is there any kind of hydraulic seepage apparent? Do you notice any missing pieces or accessories? Be certain and give just as close an inspection to any attachments. Finally, make sure that a classic tractor genuinely fulfills the needs of the job you want it for. It's tough to go wrong with an antique tractor such as a John Deere if you shop cautiously.

Antique John Deere Tractors
My husband is a landscaper. He says that John Deere needs to stay with tractors. They are okay for riding lawn mowers, but most companies have caught up to them in quality. In all reality while mowers have different names, there are really only about three companies making the engines.
We’ve also noticed that where you buy determines quality. For example, buying from a dealer where they specialize only in John Deere will be better quality than one that has other lines, but sells JD’s for cheaper.

Wheel Horse is the best, Mine is 39 years old. You won’t find JD’s lasting that long.
Used John Deere Tractors
I was told Deere doesn’t make their low end machines. The more expensive ones probably still better.

Just green paint, a brand name and higher prices. My Bolens mower I got from Lowes has the same engine as the John Deere they sell. While some of the mulching decks and other accessories add to the price, JD is no better than any of the others, when I used to sell mowers, JD was just getting into mass residential use (starting with Sears). I had more service calls on the JD mowers, and since I had to do some of the assembly, will tell you that there is not a lot of difference overall. Buy the mower you like, with the features you want, and go for the best price. The high end machines just cost more money and more to maintain.
