Where do I find the Vin and Engine Numbers on a 10 yr old John Deere "Gator"?
Before you start searching for a classic or just about any pre-owned tractor for your place, there are a couple of factors you need to take into account. To begin with, don't get caught up from nostalgia. Purchasing and rejuvenating a vintage tractor may be a delightful gratifying hobby to engage in. However it can also develop into a really expensive one.
Does anyone know where the numbers are on a J.D. Gator. I found a """Too Good to Be True""" deal on one , but first I would like to run the numbers to make sure I'm not buying a stolen Vehicle. I think the main Vin is just supposed to be on the dash,,(could be wrong), but I can't find an engine #,,,(I'm not even sure there is one,,but there usually is on these type of vehicles ),,,,,So , if anyone knows, I'd appreciate it !!!...........Thanks

Prior to your beginning to look for your tractor, make certain you know what you genuinely want. This may well appear too basic, nevertheless it is easy to get side tracked and buy something which you did not start out to purchase. Only once you are able to make a complete listing of your requirements should you commence your search. Don't forget to add your technical and performance requirements in the list. If you do not know precisely what you are searching for, how are you going to determine where and how to look?
If you are sincerely looking for a vintage tractor, be careful and not allow enthusiasm run away with you. If you do, you could well be in difficulty before beginning the project. Rebuilding an antique tractor or other old farm implement is gratifying. However it's not an overnight project and it can become expensive quite rapidly. Parts for a lot of old tractors are available however some are challenging to find and can be on the spendy side. Original tires may be impossible to find and reproduction tires might cost more than your tractor. You may find that rather than buying a project tractor, it would be just as satisfying to procure one which someone else has already put all of the time, effort and expense into. Chances are good that you could purchase it for less cash than the owner put into it, to say nothing of all of his labor.
Try the tractor prior to deciding to buy it. Do you find it simple to get started and look, sound and feel right? Are the tires in good shape? Is there any hydraulic seepage visible? Do you detect any missing parts or equipment? Be sure and give just as close an examination to any attachments. Finally, make sure that a vintage tractor genuinely fits the requirements of the job you want it for. It's difficult to go wrong with an antique tractor such as a John Deere if you search cautiously.
